[...] As we walked toward the church I could not help but notice a wonderful smell of fresh flowers. It was in stark contrast to the smell of death and pain all around us. What I slowly began to realize was that out in front of the church was a wonderful patch of flowers that were thriving and growing and they were absolutely gorgeous. I was shocked to see something so sweet and inviting in the midst of the living circumstances I was seeing. Read More [...]

Sometimes I visit a Unitarian Church in DC. I was told that they had the first integrated movie theater in DC. The congregation is predominately straight with a few gay people; black, white and a few other nationalities. The members always make me feel welcome. They are active in the surrounding community.
I know what you mean when you say why isn't the Evangelical church as welcoming.

Yes, thanks for the post. It seems so hard today to allow justice to prevail over our own interests or that of our "tribe." But we must do that because of the Mercy he shows us and we must do our best to impart that mercy to others.

It's one of those things that is so easy to preach, and so hard to admit when I see such bias in myself, such a knee-jerk unwillingness to be the neighbor I'm called to be. It's like Gandhi said: "Be the change you wish to see in the world." If you crave justice AND mercy, ask God for the grace to be those things to others.

Thanks for this, friend. I'm so glad you care about these things and keep talking about them. I've been thinking a lot about the juxtaposition of justice and mercy, so it's fitting to read your emphasis on both here now.
