Prayer for my wife please!!

September 30th, 2007

I am sorry blogging has been light. Friday morning at about 3 AM I was woken up to my wife lying by our bed moaning and hardly breathing. I used to be a paramedic and I instantly realized she was having a seizure, a major one at that. 911 was of course called.

She did not have any more seizures in the hospital and they let her go mid morning and we are seeing a neurologist and having some more tests done this week. Please pray for her, her name is Amy. Also pray for my 6 year old son Jacob as he was pretty freaked out about it. Pray for me that I will be patient and wise during this whole thing. These are two traits that usually do not come to mind when you think of me (those of you who know me).

God is good, but between the finances, Amy being sick, job situations and other family issues we are being pressed on in just about every way. I am reminded of 2 Cor 4:6-9

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”

I have always fought with the head knowledge vs the heart knowledge of the Bible. I think I am pretty typical of many Christians that way, but boy am I learning the heart knowledge lately.

Blogging might be a little light this next week, but I will try to keep you posted as we learn what is happening.

Man Talk

September 28th, 2007

Hello men, I am talking to you in this post. Women read at your own risk. Men we have a problem in the church today, it is a game called Bunko. Apparently it is a secretive game that only middle age, evangelical women can play. No men allowed. This is wrong on so many levels. We must stop the scourge on the church while we still can.

Apparently all you need is some change, a good margarita recipe and a commitment to not tell your man what you have been doing. My friend and I tried to infiltrate this closed group of women and the results were well….

As you can see, these women take there Bunko seriously. We must do our best to retard this incursion into the church while we still can. Let’s face it men, we lost the opportunity to stop scrapbooking in it’s tracks, but we have a chance to win our women back from this scourge on the health of our family.

Let’s face facts men, without our women we are lost. We MUST stand united in bringing our women home. Call your Pastor, get him to teach against this bane on womens existence and bring our women home!

It is Finished!!

September 27th, 2007

Last night at about 9:30 Carl Holmes put the finishing touches on a class called  Modern Issues in Family Counseling. He e-mailed it to his professor and got up and

 PARTIED HIS BUTT OFF!!

His degree is now done. Two years of nights and weekends and no social life have come down to this one moment. Carl is quoted as saying “I never thought this day would come, but now that it is here AMEN!!”

Could’nt have said it better myself.

The Secret is out!

September 23rd, 2007

This is a repost from my blog before crash, but still worth reading.

Do you remember this one: “The cosmos is all there ever is, ever was, and ever will be?” (I could not find it exact) This was what Carl Sagan started out his series on the universe with over 25 years ago. What he said then sums up his life philosophy pretty well, enjoy it while you are here, because when you die you will revert back to the dust from which you were created.

Fast forward to today and we have a new concept (or a new concept in old clothing) from the new book and DVD called The Secret. This book can be basically summed up in something like this; You control your destiny, think happy thoughts, avoid negative thoughts, and the world will be your oyster. Wow thanks, I did not know this.

Both Carl Sagan and The Secret have something inherent in them both, a commitment to materialism. Carl Sagan, by decreeing that The Cosmos is bigger and better than we ever can be leaves us in the default position of “get it all now because you wont enjoy it later”. The Secret (which I shall now reveal) leaves us in the default position that the universe owes you something, and all you have to do is tap into that cosmic piggy bank that has been waiting for you. If you do that you can get everything that will make you happy. All your happiness is contained inside this little book, and it is only $19.95 plus S & H.

The writer in Ecclesiastes sums things up quite well when he says “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” (Ecc 1:9) This is the exact same thing that the writer of Ecclesiastes, King Solomon, dealt with. It is all vanity and it all means nothing.

As a society…as Christians I am afraid, we have forgotten to remember those before us. We have left the foundational moorings that God gave his people, and we have been bereft in the sea ever since. Christians everywhere need to do three very foundational things in order to save those who are getting trapped in this terrible and selfish disease. We must:

1) TURN. Christians are to be set apart from non believers by the love that we show to eachother. (John 13:35) by loving eachother we will show the unity of Spirit that Jesus wants in his children. We must turn our eyes back upon Jesus in order to re order our priorities.

2) RELENT. To relent means to; to soften in feeling, temper, or determination; become more mild, compassionate, or forgiving. We must stop what we are doing and become more compassionate and forgiving. When we use ourselves as our own arbiter of our fate judge and jury we will never be compassionate and forgiving. We can become more soft in our disposition by living our lives submitted to Jesus Christ.

3) REMEMBER. “And you shall [earnestly] remember all the way which the Lord your God led you these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and to prove you, to know what was in your [mind and] heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.” (Deuteronomy 8:2) We must remember always that which God has done for us. When we forget we become ineffective and unyielded.

As many of you know I work with the poor and the orphaned and the “least of these”. One thing that I know that Christians around the country do not understand (because I talk to them all day) is the life of the least of these. If we turn our eyes off ourselves and turn them to Jesus and let him teach us and retarget our priorities we will become more like Christ. That is our ultimate goal.

Things I have learned…

September 22nd, 2007

1) Just because a place offers free wi fi I do not have to get my laptop out. Sometimes you just need to look around and see the people around you, it is fun actually.

2) Just because my cell phone rings I do not have to answer it. In public especially. Rudeness is never in vogue. I love the vibrate function to, I do not have to disturb anyone.

3) Just because a book is great does not mean I have to own it. The library is always accessible and they have almost any book I would ever want.

4) Smiles are more important to me then almost anything. When my son smiles my world comes to a halt and I try to enjoy the moment. Anytime someone smiles I can not but help smiling back. :)

5) Listening is an aquired skill and it must be learned and relearned. I have had my best conversations with people when I just sit and listen and say little to nothing. People appreciate it as well. As a Pastor a lot of people want a piece of my mind, and I am happy to oblige…when asked. I have to remember not to go throwing it out there though.

6) People are awesome, and I love them…but some of them are just really messed up. I include myself in that list as well. I may be a pastor, but I work full time for a Christian Ministry and people are just as messed up, if not more in ministry.

7) As much as I fret about finances and how I am not doing near as well financially as I am used to, God is still in control and he is paying the bills.

8) Putting to much faith in others will burn you. Love and trust people to a healthy degree, but remember they are human as well and they make mistakes. You will disappoint them, and they will disappoint you from time to time.

9) Being married is God’s greatest gift to me. I can not imagine what I would be doing had I not met Amy when I did. I probably would still be working a dead end job managing a restaurant that just recently went belly up…what would I do then?

10) Courage is something we all need to have a little more of. Sometimes a lot more. Courage to face the day in a new and exiting way knowing that God has a plan for the day and that it will be fulfilled no matter what.

O.K., that is my top 10. I could keep going on and on, but you get my drift.

Genuflecting at the Bush

September 20th, 2007

No one is an atheist when in a fox hole is a saying I have heard now and again. However, there are all kinds of foxholes in life. One does not need to be a soldier to seek out a place where we can retreat into and pray for all the comforts and security we desperately seek when things get out of the control that we only think we have over the things of life.

I am learning that it is true that when we are most vulnerable, we are also most aware of the pain and the loss of others. Every situation I find myself in is another link in the chain of almost unbearable pain and what seems to be pointless loss from which each and every one of us will experience. One of the most memorable lines from the 80’s movie The Princess Bride says “life is pain”. Every single moment of every single day, somewhere in this world, a mother is lamenting the loss of a son, a husband is lamenting the loss of a wife, and someone else is contemplating ending it all. What is the chief end of all of this? Why do bad things happen to good people? These questions are forever repeated because it is a question every culture has had to come to terms with in some form or another. When faced with the tragedies we all must endure, for a few moments we share a collective memory of loss, of the pain of loss from all deaths, from the onset of time.

September 11th the world let out a collective moan as we all had to ask that horrid question, why? Our nation’s conscious, the free world’s conscious was on that day was unified in purpose and mission. We all sought in our own way to answer the questions that plagued us to our very core. Ralph Marston

September 18th, 2007

Let go of your attachment to being right, and suddenly your mind is more open. You’re able to benefit from the unique viewpoints of others, without being crippled by your own judgment.

Seems quite relevant to me after the Yoga Post.

Red Letters, Living a Faith that Bleeds

September 18th, 2007

Pop Quiz, which one in this picture is Tom Davis? If you guessed the second one from the left then you are right. I love this picture of Tom because it clearly shows the heart of Tom, he is not afraid to get in the lives of children and hang out with them on the ground, or in the orphanage, or in the school…in fact he loves it there. I think if you ask Tom where he would like to live, hands down it would be in the middle of the most ravaged town in Swaziland among the “least of these”

In his latest book Red Letters, Living a Faith that Bleeds Tom Davis leads us into a world that so many of us could not conceive of, the life of an orphan ravaged by the blight of the 21st century, that blight of course is A.I.D.S. He goes much further then reminding us of our Biblical mandate to take care of the widow and orphan and shows us how we, as God’s church, can reach out in practical and life giving ways and make a difference. It is a full out indictment of the church and how we have treated this in the past, and then it provides us with the motivation to go and do something about our previous apathy.

The last 30 pages of the book are dedicated to providing you with the practical resources to get involved. Some of it may be familiar, and some of it will not. Please take the time to read the list of organizations and worthy causes that he has compiled and prayerfully get involved. You will not be disappointed. One such campaign of note that Tom himself has recently started is called 5 for fifty.

Soon the world will see it’s 50,000,000 (yes that is million) case of A.I.D.S. The unfortunate fact is that it will probably happen to an orphan, and likely in Africa. Without the mobilization of the church it will only get worse. 5 for fifty is 5 steps you can take to begin to change the plight of the orphan.

1) Give 5 minutes a day to prayer for those with HIV/AIDS.

2) Give 5 hours a week to fast for those with HIV/AIDS.

3) Give 5 dollars a month to the 5 to fifty fund to support worthy causes in the regions hardest hit by HIV/AIDS.

4) Give 5 days a year to travel over seas and to work to alleviate the suffering and burdens of children in extreme poverty and burdened with HIV/AIDS.

5) Give 5 people the opportunity to join you in your journey. Not necessarily traveling to the area if you do not have the monetary resources, but sharing about what you are doing in the first three with others and encouraging them to join you.

Tom has written a book that is close to my heart. I work for Compassion International and we are well aware of what HIV is doing to our children. I am forever grateful for Tom and his willingness to shake the church out of it’s slumber and say “arise, go forth and do great things in the name of Jesus” The church, allied with governments and other N.G.O.’s has the ability to eradicate A.I.D.S, and to share the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ at the same time. Let’s step out and do it. God will be in our midst.

I love Crayons!

September 13th, 2007

You Are a Yellow Crayon

Your world is colored with happy, warm, fun colors.
You have a thoughtful and wise way about you. Some people might even consider you a genius.
Charming and eloquent, you are able to get people to do things your way.
While you seem spontaneous and free wheeling, you are calculating to the extreme.Your color wheel opposite is purple. You both are charismatic leaders, but purple people act like you have no depth.

What Color Crayon Are You?

We Must Preserve The Earths Dwindling Resources For My Five Children

We Must Preserve The Earth’s Dwindling Resources For My Five Children

“Nothing less than the preservation of my descendents’ lifestyle itself is at stake.

Imagine a world devoid of pristine wilderness for my progeny to explore on the weekends in the sport-utility-vehicles of the future, leaving my youngest son, Dylan, with nowhere to blow off steam on off-road adventures. Imagine a world in which my beautiful middle son, Connor, is denied his twice-daily half-hour hot showers because of water shortages. Picture what it would be like for my oldest boy Asher, preparing to start his first semester at Stanford, to have to go without basic amenities such as cable television, satellite radio, central air, or massage chairs, all because of the shortsighted squandering by his parents’ generation of our non-renewable energy sources today.

Though it seems like a far-off nightmare, this terrible vision is all too possible. Would you want to live in a world where my five children had to endure such horrible deprivations? I know I wouldn’t.”

Thanks to RLP I am now hopelessly addicted to farce websites such as The Onion and Lark News. This one caught my attention because when it comes down to it I think most people who are pressing so hard in the environmentalist lobby are doing it out of pure and unadulterated guilt. They are not in love with the environment, they just want to do there part to “make a better tomorrow” while driving gas guzzling SUV’s and consuming so much electricity that the power grid of just 10 years ago would have overloaded on what we consume now.

O.K., my conservative diatribe is done. My soapbox has collapsed
